Justice Mauritius - The trial opens in Port-Louis on Friday of 12 Somali pirates captured by US forces on 5 January, official sources told PANA on Wednesday In Port-Louis.

The Mauritian minister of Foreign Affairs, Arvin Boolell, said that all measures had been taken to receive the first group of Somali pirates.

“We have honoured our commitments to the international community and the European Union (EU)," he said, adding that the pirates would be repatriated to Somaliland after their trial within the framework of an agreement signed in that respect.

Mr Boolell said Mauritius was willing to receive 12 to 15 pirates.

The fight against piracy and security in the Indian Ocean is one of the top priorities for the international community and regional organizations, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association, the Indian Ocean Commission, the Southern African Development Community and the African Union (AU).
