Piracy & Robbery At Sea Stats - July 2012

In all, there were 19 reported incidents of global piracy and robbery at sea in July 2012. Of those, one hijack occurred, 16 attacks and/or robberies and 2 suspicious activities were recorded.

In the East Africa region where there has been no successful hijack since June 19, when a fishing dhow was seized, no ship has been fired upon or a boarding attempted since June 26, says IMB.

It marks the longest unbroken stretch of peaceful transit through the waters off Somalia, and has been attributed to the increased use of armed guards on ships, international naval patrols, and bad weather. The only activity has been 2 robberies, one suspicious event  in the Red Sea and an approach in the Gulf of Aden.

West Africa saw five incidents, but this month they were spread between Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Benin rather than just Nigeria. One suspicious incident occurred off Togo.

In Asia, a slight fall in the number of incidents to six, however, one instance saw a hijack of a Malaysia tug boat and barge with the 12 crew being set adrift in a lifeboat by the pirates. The crew were later rescued. The vessels whereabouts have been unknown since 27 July - since found and recovered. Read the report HERE.

South America moved up with 2 reported incidents occurring in July after no reported incidents in June.
