High Risk Areas Piracy Incident Maps - March 2012

OCEANUSLive provides graphic illustrations of pirate activity throughout the month of March.

Piracy and robbery at sea incidents throughout March 2012 show an increase in hijacks by Somali pirates as the weather becomes more conducive to small boat operations which is expected to remain the case into the majority of the month of May. Eight hijacks occurred in the Horn of Africa/Indian Ocean HRA, whilst the risk of more violent piracy off the coast of West Africa has also increased, the amount of attacks were actually lower than in February. A similar result is seen in Southeast Asia.

March 2012 saw 42 incidents occur. One incident in the North Atlantic Ocean off Port Au Prince anchorage, Haiti - Denmark-flagged product tanker, Northern Princess is not shown.
