MV Eagle released by Somali pirates after 9 months captivity

Following payment of a ransom, MV Eagle, which was pirated on January17,  2011 approximately 490nm South of Salalah, Oman has been released from pirate control off the coast of Somalia. The ship is now on her way to a safe port, reports EU NAVFOR.

The Cyprus-flagged and Greek-owned vessel with a deadweight of 52,163 tonnes and a crew of 24 Filipinos, was on passage from Aqabar in Jordan to Paradip in India when it was attacked.

Earlier this year there was a false alarm regarding MV Eagle release in April, when maritime sources indicated a ransom of between $4 and 6 million had been paid for the ship. Negotiations were admitted to have been undertaken at the time, but the details remained confidential

"We have received our $6 million ... The ship has just started to sail away from our zone with a warship," a pirate who gave his name as Kalif told Reuters at the time.

Marine monitoring group Ecoterra Intl also confirmed the release at that time, saying the ship was steaming out to safe waters. However, the reports turned out to be incorrect, and the seamans' ordeal continued for a further 5 months.
