All is silent concerning the pirate-held MV Blida

The fate of Algeria-flagged bulk carrier, MV Blida, seized by Somali pirates earlier this year, is still unclear as no contact has been established for more than 80 days since it was pirated near Oman, according to Somalia Report's Maritime Editor, Andrew Mwangura.

“It is mysterious not to establish contact with a pirated ship for more than one or two weeks,” said Mr. Mwuangura. “The fate and the condition of the 27 crew cannot be established,” said Mr. Mwangura.

The MV Blida, which seized on Jan 1, 2011 about 150 miles southeast of the port of Salalah in Oman, has a crew of 27 from Algeria, Ukraine and the Philippines and was heading to Dares Salaam, Tanzania at the time of the attack.

Loaded with some 24,000 tones of clinker, the last time efforts have been made to contact some of the Algerians among the crew was on February 23, 2011.

The Algerian ship is said to be operated by Sekur Holdings and owned by International Bulk Carriers of Algeria.
