Recent pirate and armed robbery activity in Southeast Asia, India and off the Seychelles

A recent spate of piracy and armed robbery at sea in Southeast Asia, India and the Seychelles has seen hostage taking at knife point and with automatic weapons. Reported through the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre, based in London and Malaysia, the incidents demonstrate the widespread dangers to seafarers, not only off Somalia. The following reports underline the menace of piracy.
April 25, at 0410 local, in position 0308N – 10516E, around 20nm west of Anambas islands, South China Sea. 7 pirates armed with knives, in a wooden boat, boarded a bulk carrier underway. They entered the Master’s and 2/O cabins; stole cash and personal belongings and took them to the stern prior to escaping.

April 25, at 0055 UTC, in position 0257N - 10517E, around 25nm west of Anambas Islands, South China Sea. 7 pirates armed with knives boarded a general cargo vessel underway. They entered the bridge and took the Officer Of the Watch and the duty AB hostage, then went to 3/O cabin. The robbers forced the 3/O to take them to Master’s cabin, where they proceeded to steal ship’s cash, property and personal effects. Later the pirates ordered the Master to take them to poop deck from which they made their escape. The pirates are likely to have been the same team that carried out the earlier attack at 0410 local (above).

April 23 at 0300 local: Cochin anchorage, India. 2/O on an anchored tanker observed movement on the forecastle deck. After asking the duty A/B to check, 3 robbers were observed and reported to 2/O, who then raised the alarm. Upon seeing the alert crew, the robbers escaped in their boat with stolen ships' stores.

April 19 at 0355 local, in position 0142.33N - 10127.16E, Dumai inner anchorage, Indonesia.
Approximately 6-7 robbers, in wooden boat, approached a chemical tanker at anchor. The duty deck crew noticed one robber onboard and immediately informed the Deck Officer. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered. One robber jumped overboard and escaped with other the robbers. The Master made several attempts to contact the port control but received no response. Nothing was reported stolen.

April 19 at 0435 UTC: In position 03:47S – 055:41E, around 1nm off Denis island, Seychelles. Seven pirates armed with AK47 and RPG boarded a fishing vessel carrying out fishing activities. The crew immediately sent a distress alert message, which was received by the Seychelles Coast Guard. The pirates took four crewmembers hostage, and threatened to kill them if they refused the order to steer the fishing vessel towards the Somali coast. On April 20, the Seychelles Coast Guard launched an operation which culminated in the rescue of the four fishermen, and the capture and detention of the seven pirates. During yet another daring operation by the Seychelles Coast Guard, one of the few authorities to conduct such robust measures against piracy in the Indian Ocean, one crew member was slightly injured. Three pirates were injured in the rescue and one pirate died IMB Report.
