The idea behind |O|L| came from the need to share information within the industry to support common issues affecting mariners worldwide. Real-time sharing of information in high threat environments is not a new concept, and has been used within shipping since the advent of the first VHF radios. However, times have moved on and information sharing has grown through a newer technology, the Internet.
Real-time sharing of information, in high threat environments, over a computer network in order to mitigate threat is a proven concept that has been used over the past 10 years by emergency services and military alike. |O|L| will enable the same process for the maritime world. This is a commercial social network to support commercial success.
The site is
now live and has opened with a real-time collaboration centre for the
Horn of Africa. |O|L|
watchkeepers will submit information as it is received, but for the
system to truly work we will look to you, the user, to share details
of events that are witnessed in high risk environments in order to increase
overall maritime situational awareness.
So as to ensure a greater level of trust, we have also introduced an assurance process available to all users. By becoming a Verified User, you will have access to Live Collaboration centres following the provision of your verifiable information on signup. This process is free, with further details found on your Dashboard once signed in.
You can also help shape the system by providing your own input in the |O|L| Beta Feedback live collaboration. Your thoughts and ideas are important to us and could help shape the future of |O|L|. Please note, as part of the beta testing process, there are areas which are not fully developed or are 'Coming Soon'. These will come online as the beta testing progresses. Access to Live Collaborations and mapping during this time will be free of any charge.
