Suspect pirate action group operating off Omani coast
On March 3 a
t 0615 UTC, a Pirate Action Group, consisting of 1 white and black-hulled wooden Dhow and 1 grey-coloured speed boat, was reported in position 1731N 05732E, approximately 200nm North-Easterly of the port of Salalah, Oman. The PAG chased a tanker which carried out evasive manoeuvres, increased speed, and sent out an alert message prior to PAG aborting approach. Weapons were sighted. Subsequently, vessels are reminded of the precautions to be considered (below). A recent attack on a chemical tanker and the sighting of a pirate action group was reported to have occurred February 28 within the vicinity off the Oman coast.
An international campaign has been launched calling for 'People Power' in the fight against Somali piracy in the Horn of Africa and Indian Ocean regions. Visit the site for details of the
Save Our Seafarers
campaign.
Vessels are reminded that the coalition forces'
warships may not be in the vicinity of a pirate attack, subsequently, it is emphasised that seafarers can greatly reduce their chances of being pirated if they follow precautions
as recommended in the
Best Management Practices
, increasing speed and carrying out evasive manoeuvres is a proven deterrent to piracy attacks.
Vessels are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of the reported position of the activity and maintain maximum CPA with any ship acting suspiciously. Additionally, registration of vessel movement with
MSC(HOA)
prior to transiting the region is recommended.
