Anchored Tanker attacked by armed robbers in the South China Sea
At
0315 Local time, in position 0120.8N – 10420.5E, eastern OPL anchorage, Malaysia, 5 robbers armed with guns and knives boarded a tanker at
anchor. The Chief Engineer and the duty AB were held by the robbers brandishing guns and
knives. The robbers went on to steal personal belongings and then escaped in a waiting

Vessels are advised to maintain anti-piracy watches and report all
piratical attacks and suspicious movements of craft to the IMB Piracy

Link]. It is emphasised that seafarers can greatly
reduce their chances of being pirated if they follow precautions
as recommended in the Best Management Practices,
used in the Horn of Africa region, which include increasing speed and
carrying out evasive manoeuvres is a proven deterrent to piracy attacks. It also provides self-protection measures that may be applied to merchant vessels.
Vessels
are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity
of the reported position of the attack and maintain
maximum CPA with any ship acting suspiciously.
