Merchant Vessel evades Pirate Mothership attempted hijack in the Indian Ocean, in which NO weapons were fired.
In what may be considered a departure from the normal pirate method of operating, it was reported on 3 February at 1431 UTC, that a merchant vessel was came under attack by pirates in position 1629N 06557E in the Indian Ocean, East of Socotra Island. One mothership and one skiff were involved, however, after initial reports stated weapons were used, a follow up report stated that No weapons were fired. The vessel successfully evaded the hijack attempt. This comes after an attack on 2 February, in the mid-afternoon, by pirates in position 1303N 06330E, in the Indian Ocean, East of Socotra Island. In this case, a pirate mothership and 1 skiff; fired small arms and RPGs. The vessel managed to successfully evade the attempted hijack. However, the Pirate action group (PAG) remains in the area.

Vessels are reminded that the coalition forces' warships may not be in the vicinity of a pirate attack, subsequently, it is emphasised that seafarers can greatly reduce their chances of being pirated if they follow precautions as recommended in the Best Management Practices, increasing speed and carrying out evasive manoeuvres is a proven deterrent to piracy attacks.

Vessels are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of the reported position of the attack and maintain maximum CPA with any ship acting suspiciously. Additionally, registration of vessel movement with MSC(HOA) prior to transiting the region is recommended.
