News: Recent Robberies At Sea - Nigeria & Indonesia

Robberies at sea off Nigeria and Jakarta, Indonesia highlight the continued risk to the seafaring community
Two incidences of robbery at sea were reported recently by the International Maritime Bureau Piracy Reporting Centre, which resulted in ship and/or personal belongings being stolen. Such incidents further demonstrate the increased risks to seafarers as they transport goods worldwide.
The first incident which occurred on 27 Januaryat 0820 Local time, in position 0411.6N – 006:58.3E, 3NM Southwest Bonny fairway buoy, Nigeria, where the oil loading platforms are located; saw 6 pirates, armed with guns, board an offshore tug underway. The pirates stole the vessel’s cash, property, Captain’s cash and personal belongings, and made good their escape. No injuries to crew were reported.


The second incident occurred on 28 January, at 0330 Local time at Tanjung Priok anchorage, Jakarta, Indonesia. The duty crew on the bridge wing of an anchored tanker noticed a robber on the main deck and another robber climbing onboard. The duty crew and the Deck Officer shouted at the robbers, who jumped overboard and escaped in a waiting boat. Upon further investigation, the crew discovered 3 padlocks had been broken and engine spares were stolen by the robbers. The local Port control was informed.
