MV ELENI P Released By Somali
Pirates 11 December MV ELENI P, a Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned
(
Greek company Eleni Shipping Ltd) bulk carrier, deadweight 72,119 tons,
was pirated on the morning of 12 May 2010 approximately 250NM
south-east of Salalah off the
Omani coast. The MV ELENI P, which has a crew of 23, of which 19 are Filipinos,
2 are Greek, one Ukrainian and one Romanian; all said to be unharmed.

The MV was held near Garacad at the north-east Somalia coast. No ransom figure has been released to date. A report has circulated that MV Eleni P had been attacked in the region back in April 2009 when sailing under the name MV Seahorse.
The best methods of avoiding being hijacked by pirates remains following the
procedures laid down in Best Management Practices v3. There have been some notable successes in recent weeks from adopting the guidance in the BMP.

vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and
vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR also
protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters
and disrupts piracy. EU NAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off
the coast of Somalia. NATO's counter piracy operation is Operation OCEAN
SHIELD.
