EUCAP Nestor Head of Ops Meets EUNAVFOR FCdr & Somali Maritime Security Leaders

ON 1 September, EUCAP Nestor’s Head of Operations hosted a meeting with the Force Commander from EU NAVFOR Atalanta and key Federal Somali maritime security leaders.

EUCAP Head of Ops meets Somali Maritime security leadersAt the mission’s HQ in the Mogadishu International Airport area, piracy was the main topic discussed as well as developments and trends.

The more than 3,300 Kilometres of Somali coast-line present an enormous challenge for Somali security agencies to effectively patrol or to supress crime.

The Somali Security Maritime leaders shared with their European partners, that although piracy is being kept at bay, the criminals involved have diversified and could return to piracy if presented with an opportunity. Without an established national capacity to interdict crime at sea or on the shore, Somali maritime security leaders count on the International community to support their maritime capacity building.

EUCAP Nestor and EU NAVFOR Atalanta are working together to assist Somalia in countering its treats and in buildings its capacity to prevent and prosecute maritime crime.
