ECPD Keen to Contribute Towards the Realisation of Peace Centre in Seychelles
IN a letter published in Seychelles Nation (Thursday 21st January, 2016), Prof. Dr. Negoslav Ostojic, the Executive Director of the European Center for Peace and Development (ECDP) based in Belgrade, Serbia, states that his organisation is interested in contributing towards the establishment in Seychelles of a centre for Peace and National Reconciliation Studies.
Prof. Ostojic was responding to an article by Seychelles founding President Sir James R. Mancham which Nation published on Monday 18th January, 2016, saying that the idea of promoting such a centre in Seychelles is one whose time had come.
"If Seychelles can be the centre of the Vanilla Islands Tourism concept, if it can be the centre of the Blue Economy philosophy - why not also offer ourselves as a centre for Peace and National Reconciliation Studies?"
As a matter of fact, the Republic of Seychelles have already been involved in the national reconciliation process three years ago when Seychelles actual President James Alix Michel and President Jacob Zuma of South Africa hosted the feuding leaders of Madagascar on the island of Desroches in the Seychelles archipelago in an endeavour to promote Malagasy unity and reconciliation in the large Indian Ocean island.
It is to be further noted that last week the Republic of Seychelles withdrew its candidacy to become a member of the United Nations Security Council in favour of Ethiopia, with only Kenya left as other candidate from Africa interested in the position.
In his letter to Nation, Prof. Ostojic who referred to Sir James R. Mancham as "a highly respected member of the ECPD Academic Council for over 30 years", said that Mancham's idea is an innovative one of great interest to the ECPD and that considering Seychelles geographic situation and past history, ECPD would be interested to contribute towards the realisation of such a project.
The European Center for Peace and Development of the University for Peace established by the United Nations is an International Inter-Government Education Research organisation, founded in 1983 with its headquarters in Belgrade, based on the agreement concluded between the University for Peace established by the United Nations and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, as a unique organisation for post-graduate education and also other forms of learning and research aimed at promotion of peace, development and international cooperation.
