10 Migrants Dead as Boat Capsizes, Nearly 1,000 Rescued in Sicilian Channel

IN TOTAL, 941 migrants were rescued in the Sicilian Channel by the Italian Coast Guard on Tuesday 3 March. Among the various operations coordinated by the National Rescue Centre in Rome, 121 people from an overturned boat were rescued and 10 bodies recovered by the Coast Guard ship Dattilo, which had on board 318 migrants rescued during a previous operation.


About 50 Miles North of Libya

Italian Coastguard Self Protection

In less than 24 hours, a total of seven rescue operations were coordinated by the Coast Guard in a sea area about 50 miles north of Libya. With the assistance of three merchant ships, one of which had saved 183 people; it was arranged to send the ship Coast Guard, Fiorillo, which itself had rescued 319 migrants, and required the use of a unit of the Navy under Triton was necessary to come to aid the operation.

Relief for 30 Children

Altogether five rafts and two barges loaded with migrants were rescued with their origin believed to be Syrian, Palestinian, Tunisian, Libyan and sub-Saharan Africa. Among those rescued more than 30 children and over 50 women, including one pregnant who required urgent medical evacuation with a 300 class patrol boat of the Lampedusa Coast Guard.

The Tunisian Ministry of Defence stated that its naval forces rescued 81 migrants from a boat taking on water off the island of Djebra, Tunisia on Tuesday night.
