The World in Seychelles

The World, a spectacular cruise ship owned by the residents who travel on it, is scheduled to stop in Seychelles this week (from February 26-28).

It will first dock on Mahé where the residents will be invited to join in many activities on the island including excursions to various landmarks and five-star hotels. They will proceed to La Digue on February 27 followed by a visit on Praslin the following day.

The World was launched in 2002 and is the largest privately-owned residential yacht with 165 residencies on board. Its Seychelles agent is 7° South, a company led by Anna Butler-Payette.

Last week, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St Ange, had a one-night stay on board the ship then in the Maldives where he delivered a lecture about Seychelles before the ship’s scheduled arrival in Port Victoria this week.

The World first visited Seychelles in January 2005, ten years ago, when it arrived in Port Victoria with founding President James R. Mancham who had been invited to be the guest lecturer on the segment of the 10-day cruise from Safaga in the Red Sea port of Egypt to Seychelles.

When asked to talk about the ship, Mr Mancham said one can only understand the true luxury and elegance of The World by living on it for a while. However, Mr Mancham outlined some of the featuress of the ship and the services it offers to its residences and guests.

There are four restaurants on board, reflecting a wide spectrum of contrasting cooking styles and flavours: (i) Portraits – an elegant formal restaurant featuring exquisite French cuisine; (ii) East – a wide selection of eastern and far eastern dishes including a sushi bar; (iii) Tides – Mediterranean cooking with an Italian accent and (iv) Marina – which serves steaks, seafood and rotisseur specialities.

For informal dining there are: (i) Freddy’s Daily which incorporates a gourmet market, a bakery and wine merchant. Freddy’s Daily also offers breakfast, lunch or daytime snacks at any time; (ii) The Garden – for afternoon tea and coffee, serving sandwiches, scones and cakes; (iii) The Pool Grill – for casual snacks and meals throughout the day; (iv) Chef’s Service – for a nominal fee, a chef and his team will cook and serve your meal in your own apartment kitchen.

For sport and fitness, The World has a golf club which looks after the needs of any golfer on board. One can choose from practice sessions and lessons with computerised golf-swing analysis with the ship’s professional or go for rounds of golf at many of The World’s exclusive clubs, all reserved and arranged through the pro-shop on board.

For a game of tennis there’s a full size court on the upper deck of the ship with many keen players.

For watersports the retractable stern of the ship provides a marina for a wide range of personal sailing, power craft and other sports. For swimming there is an 18-metre pool fully equipped with current jets ideal for exercise or leisurely bathing.

If you enjoy being massaged or having a beauty treatment there is a large spa operated by the world renowned clinic La Prairie. For spare time there is an internet café with the technology of accessing or being accessed from anywhere in the world.

There is Palette, a well equipped studio for those who enjoy arts and craft. There is a study/library with a collection of more than 3,000 books and videos covering a wide variety of study topics, interest features, classics, contemporary fiction and reference.

If you wish to enjoy a great cigar, there is an elegant cigar and cognac club room. There is also a splendid auditorium, The Colosseo Theatre, fully equipped for film shows, first runs and classics and for guest lectures and a variety of musical performances

If you have the desire to think about God and the ways of this life, there is Harmony, an interdenominational retreat for private meditation and prayer. It is a global house of worship.

Mr Mancham said that he spent about 10 minutes everyday in harmony, thinking and reflecting. “Perhaps I was there at the wrong time but there was never anyone there when I was. Obviously, if owners of apartments are in a worshipping and reflecting mood they have their private patios overlooking the endless ocean at all times to contemplate the rising or setting sun or to gaze at the stars and the moon on cloudless evenings. What better atmosphere to feel spiritual and discover one’s soul,” Mr Mancham declared.

About the interesting group of rich and famous people whom Mr Mancham met and befriended on this cruise from Egypt to Seychelles between November 15-25, 2004, the founding President of Seychelles said one can read all about it in his recently published book ‘Seychelles: Saga of a small nation navigating through the cross-currents of a big world’. The Seychelles edition of the book was launched in Seychelles last year. In fact, Amazon.com carries the US edition of the book as of yesterday (February 22) and this can be viewed at HERE.

According to Gordon Anderson, chief executive of Paragon House, Minneapolis, USA, the e-book version will be made available some time next month.
