Marlins MCA Approved Security eLearning Goes Global

THE UK MCA have granted approval to Marlins for their new STCW eLearning courses, resulting in further expansion of Marlins’ international Approved Test Centre network.Marlins Training Solutions for the shipping industry

The 2010 Manila amendments to the STCW Convention came into effect in 2012 and included a new requirement, Section A-VI/6.  This requires all crew, whether deck, engine/technical, hotel, superyacht or concession, to undergo security awareness training.  Crew members with specific security duties must also study and gain certification for additional topics.

Marlins STCW security courses allow students to learn remotely online, at their own pace.  Study material is graphical and interactive, including mini assessments throughout, to check understanding.  Once the candidate has completed their study of the MCA approved course and is confident with the subject, they are able to visit a Marlins Approved Test Centre, to undertake the assessment.

The Approved Test Centre network includes over 146 third party companies across 33 countries.  The network was originally established as locations for approved Maritime English language testing, a requirement of the UK MCA and many other flag states and companies.  Every year, over 100,000 of these tests are carried out.

In line with the MCA approval of the courses, a number of Approved Test Centres, including Genesis Personnel Ltd (Aberdeen, UK) and D&B Services (Antibes, France), have expanded their Marlins offerings to include the new security course assessments.

Jörg Wendt, Head of Training at D& B Services, said:  "Marlins security elearning courses and assessments are very nicely presented and offer a very convenient to a large-scale training requirement".

Louise Stephens, Senior Recruitment Consultant at Genesis Personnel Ltd, said: "We were delighted to hear of the MCA approval of Marlins' security courses, allowing us to certify crew for our clients.  We are offering assessments by appointment and will also provide computer space in our offices for candidates to study, if needed."

The MCA approval adds to the range of options available from Marlins for STCW security elearning.  These include variants for cruise ship staff and also Liberia/Isle of Man approved courses, which allow the assessment to be completed online, immediately after study.  Individuals are advised to contact their Company Training or Recruitment Department for guidance on which flag approved version is required.
