Seychelles High Level Committee on Piracy Discusses Approach to Maritime Security

Republic of SeychellesMinistry of Home Affairs and Transport PRESS RELEASE 25 April 2014

High Level Committee on Piracy meets. Reviews maritime security measures and onward cooperation with Japan.

ON MONDAY 21 April 2014, the Seychelles High level Committee on Piracy (HLCP) conducted their second meeting for this year, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting was held to review and debate ongoing discussions and presentations regarding Seychelles’ approach to maritime security. The meeting also provided an opportunity for the committee to review ongoing cooperation between Seychelles and Japan. The first meeting for the HLCP was held on Thursday 23 January 2014.

Following the first piracy attack on a Seychelles-flagged catamaran – the “Serenity”, in February 2009, with three Seychellois hostages aboard, the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. James Michel, established a 12- member High Level Committee on Piracy (HLCP) mandated to implement the national anti-piracy plan.

The second meeting for this year was chaired by Minister Morgan and co–chaired by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean Paul Adam. A technical working group which supports the HLCP is chaired by the Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Maurice Loustau-Lalanne.

Despite recording several attempts by pirate groups against vessels off the coast of Somalia and Gulf of Aden for this year, the pirates have been unsuccessful in taking any ships or crew hostage to date.
