Seychelles Special Communiqué for a Special Evening

A premier and very special screening in the Seychelles of a new Hollywood block buster film based on real life events is to happen shortly. And for the Seychelles a ‘frontline’ state which faced down Somali pirate incursions, this film for some strikes very close to home.

Captain Phillips Film Screening in Seychelles, November 14

The evening of the special advanced screening itself will see a 14 minute documentary being aired, providing a firsthand account by Seychelles sailors who were victims of pirate gangs who at one time prowled the high seas in search of victims and ransom, almost at will. Interesting interviews from national leaders and the President of the Seychelles sets the tone then, as to how the Seychelles would manage with utmost seriousness, acts of aggression on our small island state.

Today the tide has turned and while acts of piracy have greatly diminished thanks to a concerted effort nationally and within the Western Indian Ocean by both regional and international partners, the threats remain.

Proceeds for the evenings special screening of this critically acclaimed film will go to the ‘Seychelles Apostolate de la Mer’ & ‘Seychelles Seafarer’s Association’, benefiting directly those who interact with the sea, and by the very nature of their trade, are perhaps first to come into contact with pirates.

Additional information on this special evening will be released shortly to the media. Media contacts please at email rstange@gov.sc for more information.
