Mauritius: 12 Somalis to be Tried for Piracy

Port-Louis, Mauritius - Twelve Somali nationals arrested for alleged acts of piracy in January off their country's coast are to be tried 7-27 October in Mauritius, according to judiciary sources.
They are Abdoulakader Mohamed Ali, 22; Said Mohamed Hassan, 23; Ahmed Mohamed Ishmaël, 27; Shafil Mohamed Osman, 22; Hassan Salad Omar, 25; Said Omar Farah, 22; Abdilahi Ahmed Mohamed, 45; Ali Hassan Mohamed, 21; Abdi Mohamed Kidiy, 37; Abdi Ahmed Yussouf, 20; Abdillahi Mohamed Ahmed, 24 and Mahad Mohamed Ibrahim, 21.
They were arrested during an operation launched by the European Union Naval Force.
Mauritius is one of several countries in east Africa and the Indian Ocean region conducting trials, or intending to try pirates, because Somalia lacks the legal infrastructure.
