Seychelles Set to Take Chairmanship of CGPCS in 2016

THE Republic of Seychelles has played a key role in ensuring maritime safety and bringing an end to the scourge of Somali based piracy.Seychelles Flag

Seychelles has been an active member of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS) since its inception and has been instrumental along with other international partners in securitizing the western Indian Ocean and has strived to safeguard commerce and humanitarian aid along one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors.

As such, CGPCS has endorsed the offer of the Government of Seychelles to take the chair of the CGPCS Presidency for the year 2016. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Joël Morgan will assume chairmanship of the group during the period.

CGPCS stakeholders have commended the Seychelles for its commitment and welcome Seychelles as a regional actor taking this responsibility.

Seychelles’ Chairmanship of the CGPCS will be actively supported by partner states most notably- the United States of America, the Kingdom of Norway and the European Union who share Seychelles determination to eradicate piracy.
