Malaysian Gas Carrier, Teknogas, Reported Safe After Distress Signal

MALAYSIA-flagged LPG tanker, Teknogas, was reported missing off Vietnam is reported safe and unloading cargo in Indonesian port.

Talking to Online Reporter UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION, the Maritime Coordination Centre for search and rescue in Vietnam said, after information that the Malaysia-flagged LPG tanker named Teknogas was reported missing offshore Vietnam, that positive verification of information and to their knowledge, the ship was now safe and unloading goods in Indonesia.

Earlier, information on the 4,999 dwt ship Teknogas built in 1991, from the Malaysian flag Company Silverline Maritime Maritime Management SDN BHD, stated it was carrying 4239 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas having left the port of Haiphong 6 June and was expected to harbour in Palembang, Indonesia on 13 June. However, on 10 June, the ship sent a distress signal at a location verified as south of the Vietnam coast about at about 200 nautical miles (about 370km).

Earlier media reports stated that the last AIS recorded was on June 8 in position 12:37N - 109:34E, some 6nm off Vietnam coast. At around 0230 UTC 10 June, the vessel issued distress signal in position 07:36N -  108:00E, around 200nm south of Saigon, South China Sea. No details on why the distress signal was made have been given to date.
