Operations Chief Could Soon to be Appointed for EUNAVFOR Med

(Bruxelles2 logoBRUXELLES2 - Exclusive) - THE operation EUNAVFOR Med will soon be equipped with an operations head. According to the operational logic, the Italian HQ in Rome, having been proposed that an Italian senior officer will be appointed. And, according to our sources, the EU Military Committee recommended his appointment. A choice that should then be endorsed by the Political and Security Committee (PSC) and then by ministers.

Admiral Enrico Credendino Italian NavyThis would be Ammiraglio di divisione / Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino who is a regular of maritime operations. He has appointed to the anti-piracy at sea European force (EUNAVFOR Atalanta) at the Italian rotation from August to December 2012, aboard the amphibious assault ship, the San Giusto (L 9894) (Note: The same ship that recently hosted off Sicily, Federica Mogherini and Ban Ki Moon (Read the blog. Mogherini, Renzi and Ban Ki Moon off Sicily)).

Graduated from Pisa and Trieste

Born in Turin in January 1963, graduated in Naval and Marine Sciences of the University of Pisa, and in political science from the University of Trieste, Enrico Credendino has risen through the ranks of the Italian Navy: Ensign at age 20, in 1983, junior Lieutenant in 1984, Lieutenant de Vaisseau (Lieutenant) in 1988, Capitaine de Corvette (Lieutenant Commander) in 1994, Capitaine de Frégate (Commander) in 1998, Capitaine de Vaisseau (Captain) in 2004 and promoted to the grade de Contre-Amiral (Commodore) in July 2011 and then d’Amiral de Division (Admiral).

A Planner

He ordered including patrol vessel Spica (1992-1993), the frigate Maestrale (2000-2001), the first patrol squadron (2001-2002), the destroyer Mimbelli (2006-2007). He also led the school of cadets from the Naval Academy (2002-2007) and made several passes at the General Staff of the Navy, first as officer in charge of maritime policy (1999-2000), and as head of the department of political alliances (2008-2010), as Deputy to the planning department (December 2010- July 2011).

On his return from EUNAVFOR, he became head of the department "plans and operations" of the General Staff. He has coordinated, as such, marine and industrial diplomacy mission, which had taken the Cavour naval group, formed around the aircraft carrier of the same name, along the African coast and in the Persian Gulf, in Mozambique and Saudi Arabia, to promote the "Made in Italy".

A Force Commander to be Appointed

Alongside the operation leader, should then be appointed (by the PSC), a major force on area (unless one decides to merge the two positions). This position may be reserved at a British (first), some elements, but a German, French or Spanish could also be named. The Commander of the force being generally ensured by rotation (every 3, 4 or 6 months), each participating nation can thus, in turn, have a leading role in an operation.
