Seychelles Minister Morgan meets Australian High Commissioner to Explore Fields of Greater Cooperation and a Unified Approach of the Blue Economy
TODAY THE Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Mr Joël Morgan met with Australian High Commissioner accredited to Seychelles Her Excellency Susan J. Coles. Minister Morgan and High Commissioner Coles discussed key issues pertinent to the long-standing ties, which exist between the Commonwealth of Australia and the Republic of Seychelles whilst also highlighting Australian support for the concept of the Blue Economy originally championed by Seychelles.
Minister Morgan expressed the appreciation of the Republic of Seychelles to the Australian government for the continuous support given towards capacity building of the Seychellois people and to the nation as a whole across a broad spectrum of fields most notably; in education- where post-graduate scholarships have been given to Seychelles as well as Fellowship programs through the Australia Africa Award program, cooperation in the Finance Sector whereby Australia has provided assistance to the Seychelles Revenue Commission and Australia’s extensive support in the field of marmite security and its engagement continued will to end maritime piracy.
Minister Morgan noted “Seychelles is grateful to you and your Government for the support it has received in its mission to develop the concept of the Blue Economy which is essential in securing a sustainable and equitable future of our peoples.” Seychelles has made a request to Australia for expert assistance in the field of frontier technologies, which would greatly expand the scope of the Blue Economy.
High on the agenda of today’s meeting was the Indian Ocean Rim Associations’ (IORA) event to be held in Seychelles at the end of August on Women’s Economic Empowerment. Minister Morgan expressed Seychelles’ appreciation to Australia as the current chair of IORA and for choosing to conduct the event in Seychelles-which prioritises gender parity. In the same vein, Minister Morgan emphasised that Seychelles would look forward to welcoming Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to the IORA event to be held in Seychelles.
Minister Morgan concluded the meeting by making an appeal for the need of Australia to engage and advocate support at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) to be held in Paris at the 2015. “We need to make this conference count and must act now- our planet cannot afford to wait. The world needs to unite and strongly come out with a legally binding Agreement on Climate Change,” said Minister Joël Morgan.
Also present at the meeting was Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maurice Loustau–Lalanne.
