Damage Control Equipment and Training for Djibouti Navy
IN A ceremony on 6 November, EUCAP Nestor Head of Mission, Etienne de Poncins, handed over “Damage Control Equipment” for fire and flood handling to Colonel Cher, the Commander of Djibouti Navy, in the presence of the Chief of General Staff, General Zakaria, as well as the Chief of Staff of Defense, General Taher.
Worth more than 100,000 Euro, the equipment will enable the Djibouti Navy to quickly respond and fight fires in areas contaminated by smoke or other contaminants and will help in operations against flooding onshore as well as on board of vessels.
“In a maritime environment, hazards such as fire and flooding are life threatening as the ship is a confined place and the crew has no escape”,says Etienne de Poncins. “We are glad to be able to provide such life-saving equipment linked to training courses on the handling of it to our partners, the Djibouti Navy, and to support them in facing this kind of challenges as well as in their fight against maritime crime”.
15 units of pressured air breath equipment (6 liters each and an additional spare bottle) as well as an air-compressor fill station, together with effective personnel protection gear like fire-protection overalls, fire-fighters protection helmets, fire-protected boots and gloves will enable 15 firefighters to operate in areas contaminated by smoke onboard or inside burning buildings. Three portable Diesel motor pumps and a comprehensive variety of hoses and suppliers will provide high efficiency in firefighting and in operations against flooding.
“With this equipment, we will be able to face dangers such as fire and flooding more professionally” says Colonel Cher. “Together with the training course on the handling of the equipment that will be delivered , it will contribute to saving lives.”
Linked to the donation a one week training course on the use and handling of this modern and sophisticated equipment will be provided to Officers of the Djibouti Navy by the firefighters of the French Forces based in Djibouti in cooperation with EUCAP Nestor.
