"Loudmouth" Somali Pirate Kingpin Arrested in Belgium
ON SATURDAY morning, police at Brussels Airport arrested a Somali suspected of being the head of the group of pirates who had taken hostage in 2009, the crew of the Belgian ship "Pompeii" for more than 70 days, say Monday De Standaard. Mohamed Abdi Hassan, nicknamed "Afweyne" ("Loudmouth" in Somali), was arrested after he had arrived in Belgium on a plane from Nairobi (Kenya).
He was transferred to Bruges, where the judge placed him under arrest for piracy.
Afweyne and son are described in the reports of the UN as the most famous and most powerful pirates who ravaged the coast of Somalia in recent years. Since 2005, Afweyne would have won, thanks to piracy activities, millions of dollars.
The reasons for his trip to Belgium are not known. The man had announced last year that stopped piracy to go into politics.
