Fire Sees 6 Crew Killed, Japan

According to Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" reported on May 16, at 1:00 in the morning, a Cambodian freighter, Taigan, moored in the port of Wakkanai, Hokkaido, Japan, caught fire. A total of six people were killed, presumed to all be Russian crewmen.Taigan on fire

According to reports, the vessel caught fire in position 45:28N, - 141:45E, near Port Wakkanai. The fire lasted about 11 hours and was extinguished at noon the same day by Hokkaido local firefighters in a boat. Three crew were said to be poisoned from the fumes were hospitalized, 6 crew were found dead in the superstructure with a fruther six suffering minor injuries. It was confirmed that of the 23 people on board,17 were rescued.

Wakkanai, Hokkaido Police Station is stepping up efforts to confirm the identity of the all personnel. It is likely to that the Russian crew members were between the ages of 23-50.
