Merchant Vessel evades Pirate Mothership attempted hijack in the Indian Ocean
On 2 February, in the mid-afternoon, a merchant vessel reported coming under attack by pirates in position 1303N
06330E, in the Indian Ocean, East of Socotra Island, by a pirate mothership and 1 skiff; small arms and RPGs were fired. The vessel
managed to successfully evade the attempted hijack. However, the Pirate action group (PAG) remains
in the area and may possibly be associated with an attack carried out on 28 January at aproximately 560NM East of Socotra island, (only 200Km from today's attack) in position 1117N 06333E, where a crude tanker evaded pirates by remaining in the citadel prior to being rescued by a Dutch warship on 29 January. See
IMB Report.
Vessels are reminded that the coalition forces' warships may not be in the vicinity of a pirate attack, subsequently, it is emphasised that seafarers can greatly
reduce their chances of being pirated if they follow precautions
as recommended in the Best Management Practices, increasing speed and carrying out evasive manoeuvres is a proven deterrent to piracy attacks.Vessels
are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity
of the reported position of the attack and maintain
maximum CPA with any ship acting suspiciously. Additionally, registration of vessel movement with
MSC(HOA) prior to transiting the region is recommended.
